Advent Part 2

Part 2: Christmas Market Drinks

Besides food, drinks are also a large part of the Christmas markets and perhaps the best way to stay warm.  Here are some standards:

The typical drink is Glühwein (said gloo-vine), a hot mulled wine that comes in a city-customized mug.   There are many different shots you can get in the Glühwein, like amaretto or brandy.

Feuerzangenbowle (foya-tsongen-bola) is another mulled wine, but you prepare by placing a cone of sugar over top of it, pouring alcohol over the sugar, and then lighting it on fire.  Hence the wine is stronger and sweeter.  This is usually accompanied by watching a comedic old movie of the same name.

Kinderpunsch - kid's punch.  The non-alcoholic version of Glühwein.

Hot chocolate - Sometimes with variations, like peppermint liquor or rum.

Ich liebe Glühwein. We had it here in Paris at a Christmas market here. I'm sorry to say we didn't make it to Germany for the Christmas markets there, but hopefully there will be something to see in Stockholm in a week!

I've seen some sort of Scandinavian drink here called Glögg I think. Maybe you'll find it there!
