One of my favorite German words is Feierabend (pronounced fire.ah.bent, with more the British pronunciation of fire) . It means either the end of the workday or the time after work, so you can use it to say something like, "it's quitting time," or "have a nice night."
There's a good chance that Germans use it quite without extra thought, but for me I always think about the compound meaning:
Feiern=celebrate
Abend=evening
So when I am especially glad to get home after a long day, I always think about the word Feierabend and that I can finally celebrate being home!
Since Germans create many compound words, looking up the exact definition of Feierabend I also stumbled across two continuations: Feierabendbier (after work beer) and Feierabendverkehr (evening rush hour traffic).
Anyway, being in a country without Thanksgiving means that I have still been busy with work. But now it's Feierabend! And the weekend!
Hope everyone at home is enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers!
