First Impressions

In researching Hannover over the summer, I read that many Germans consider it to be a boring city.  However, it seems like this is not the case!  I have a feeling that, similar to Pittsburgh, it is a city that might not be a main draw for tourists but is nevertheless a good place for living.  Like most German cities, the quality of life seems to be quite high.   My hosts are fond of just going out and then sitting in a cafe, and outdoor cafes are everywhere.  One nice thing about Germany is that you are never rushed; you can just sit for as long as you want to.
Today was Entdeckertag (discovery day), so a festival throughout the city.  Instead of deep fried oreos and shish-kabobs, there were lots of stands with fish, plus fries, soft pretzels and those sorts of foods.  Otherwise music, lots of tents with brochures, just a typical sort of fest.
I will expand more about Hannover at some other point since I'm still getting oriented.
I had also heard that Hannover was not that pretty because it had been bombed during the war, and yes, there are many new buildings, but many old ones (mainly turn of the century) still survived and there is a nice mix, old beside new, all complimenting each other.
So far it's all a little overwhelming, but my German is holding up alright and I'm sure talking enough of it!
The other random thing is that there are many pigeons that roost in the courtyard of the apartment I'm staying in and they are so loud.  Due to my weird sleep schedule, I've been awake early and hear them calling quite forcefully so that you'd think it was mating season; in fact, I thought they were owls at first.  The call sounds like, "Hey there Tiffany, woo hoo!"
